Accessibility includes the journey to the door
A wide restroom is only one part of the plan. Guests need a usable approach, a suitable surface, an accessible entrance and clear maneuvering space. Keep queues, cables, tables and delivery equipment out of that route. Ask the venue and rental provider to review the actual layout together.
Request the exact model’s documentation
Review entry, grab bars, fixture clearances, turning space and door operation. The ADA guidance illustrates a 60-inch-diameter turning circle or an allowed T-shaped space; confirm the complete arrangement for the offered model. A larger interior or a “wheelchair friendly” label alone does not prove that the full configuration meets applicable standards.
For portable facilities covered by the ADA standards, the U.S. Access Board describes access to at least 5% of units in each cluster. For example, a cluster of 1–20 units needs at least 1 accessible unit; 21–40 needs at least 2. Additional state, local and event requirements may apply. U.S. Access Board toilet-room guidance ↗
Check Berkeley’s event conditions too
City-permitted events have local accessibility conditions. See the Berkeley event planning notes and have the permit reviewer confirm the quantity, distribution and signage. Do not substitute a generic calculator result for the approved plan.
Include washing and ongoing access
Confirm that the handwashing option can be reached and used by the people attending. Position it so the approach stays clear during the busiest part of the event. A delivery-day inspection is not enough if furniture, waste bins or parked vehicles will later block the route.
The ADA guide exempts portable units used exclusively by construction personnel from these particular accessibility provisions. Discuss worker needs, visitor facilities and any other applicable requirements with the site supervisor. Let the provider know about slopes and surface changes before equipment is selected. If a trailer is requested, review the ramp and landing configuration of that particular trailer.
